RIY Wheelのウェザリング方法のヒント

WdwC RCの第一弾商品としてリリースした「自分で育てるホイール RIY Wheel」のウェザリング方法のヒントをご紹介します。
RIY Wheelは銅板を切り出して製作されている為、銅の特性を活かした自然変化による「予期しない」ウェザリングを楽しむことができます。
As the very first product released by WdwC RC, we’d like to share some tips on how to weather your “RIY Wheel – the wheel you grow yourself”.
Since the RIY Wheel is crafted from cut copper plates, you can enjoy the “unexpected” weathering that comes naturally with copper’s unique properties.
酢 + 食塩を使ったウェザリング（お手軽） / Weathering with Vinegar + Salt
ご家庭にあるものでできる一番お手軽な方法です。
少し時間はかかりますが、様々な表情に変化するおもしろい方法です。
用意するもの
- 酢 20ml
- 食塩 1g
- アトマイザーや小さい霧吹き（100円ショップで購入可能）
- タッパー（100円ショップのものでOK）
ウェザリング方法
まず、ホイールフェイス（ビードロックリング）の表面の油分をきれいに落とします。
酢20mlと食塩1gをアトマイザーや霧吹きに入れてかくはんします。
もっと量を作る場合は、上記の割合で量を増やしてください。
タッパーにRIY Wheelのプレートを入れて、先程の混合液を吹きかけます。
表面が乾いてしまうと酸化が進みにくくなってしまいますので、タッパーの蓋をしっかり締めて放置します。
数時間〜数日放置しますが、酸化の具合を見て好みのところで止めます。
途中で塩を更にふりかけると、追い塩した部分だけ酸化の具合が変わるので、さらに表情豊かに仕上げることもできます。
酸化が終わったら表面の混合液を乾いた布などで拭き取るか、水洗いをします。
水洗いの場合はパティナが流れ出てしまうこともあります。
Here’s the easiest method you can do at home using items you likely already have.
It takes some time, but it’s a fun process that transforms the wheel’s appearance in many different ways.
What you’ll need
- Vinegar – 20 ml
- Salt – 1 g
- Atomizer or small spray bottle (available at 100-yen shops)
- Plastic container with lid (a 100-yen shop container works fine)
– First, thoroughly remove any oil or grease from the surface of the wheel face (beadlock ring).
– Put 20 ml of vinegar and 1 g of salt into your atomizer or spray bottle and shake well.
If you need more solution, simply increase the quantities in the same ratio.
– Place the RIY Wheel plate in the container, then spray it with the prepared mixture.
– Since oxidation slows down if the surface dries out, seal the container tightly with the lid.
– Let it sit for several hours to several days, checking the oxidation level and stopping when you reach your desired look.
If you sprinkle more salt during the process, only those areas will oxidize differently, giving the finish even more depth and character.
Once oxidation is complete, wipe off the mixture with a dry cloth, or rinse with water.
(If rinsing, note that some of the patina may wash away.)
市販のパティナ液を使ったウェザリング / Using commercially available patina solutions
アクセサリーやクラフト作品の仕上げ用でパティナ液という商品が売られています。
こちらは薬品で強制的に酸化を促進するケミカルです。
いろんなメーカーから販売されていますが、それぞれで特徴が違うみたいなので、いろいろと試してみると自分の好みが見つかるかもしれません。
同じパティナ液でもやり方によって全く違う変化が得られるので奥が深いです。
Patina solutions are sold for finishing accessories and craft items.
These chemicals accelerate oxidation artificially.
Many brands are available, each with different characteristics, so you may find your favorite by experimenting.
Even with the same patina solution, varying the application method can produce completely different results—there’s a lot to explore.
ブラックパティーナEXを使った例 / Example using Black Patina EX
「ブラックパティーナEX」は国内メーカーが販売しているので、入手しやすい商品のひとつです。
使った印象では薬品自体はそこまで強力ではないのかなという印象ですが、使い方によって十分な効果が得られます。
こちらも時間を置く場合はタッパーなどで密封しないと科学反応が進みにくいです。
上の画像1枚目はパティナ液の中に長時間浸けた後、ヤスリがけをした例です。
画像2枚目はパティナ液に軽くくぐらせるようにした例です。
仕上げは乾いた布などでパティナ液を拭き取ります（水洗いはメーカー非推奨）
One example is “Black Patina EX”, a product from a domestic manufacturer, making it easy to obtain in Japan.
From my experience, it doesn’t seem overly strong, but it still produces excellent results when used correctly.
If leaving it for a period of time, be sure to seal it in a container like a Tupperware, or the chemical reaction will slow down.
In the first example image above, the part was soaked in patina solution for a long time, then sanded.
In the second image, the part was only lightly dipped in the solution.
To finish, wipe off the patina solution with a dry cloth.
(Water rinsing is not recommended by the manufacturer.)
JAX Green Patinaを使った例 / Example using JAX Green Patina
アメリカのJAX社から販売されているパティナ液です。
今回使ったグリーンの他にも種類が豊富なシリーズです。
日本のAmazonなどでも販売されていますが高額なので、本国から輸入してしまう方が値段は安くなります。
画像1枚目は、筆塗りで2度に分けて酸化させた例です。
筆塗りの他にも漬け込んでしまう方法もあるようです。
こちらも時間を置く場合はタッパーなどで密封しないと科学反応が進みにくいです。
仕上げは乾いた布などでパティナ液を拭き取ります（水洗いはメーカー非推奨）
Another example is the patina solution from JAX, an American company.
Besides the green used here, they offer a wide variety of types.
While they’re sold on Amazon Japan, the prices are high—importing directly from the US can be cheaper.
In the first example image, oxidation was done in two stages using brush application.
Besides brushing, soaking is also an option.
As with the other product, sealing the piece in a container is important if leaving it for a while.
To finish, wipe off the patina solution with a dry cloth.
(Water rinsing is not recommended by the manufacturer.)
ウェザリングの仕上げ / Final finishing for weathering
銅は素材の特性上、どんどん経年変化が進みます。
ウェザリングをした状態で止めてしまいたい場合はマットクリアスプレーを吹きかけて仕上げます。
Due to copper’s nature, the aging process will continue over time.
If you want to preserve the look achieved through weathering, spray a coat of matte clear finish to seal it in.
